Franchise Mode Preview
Nashville declines. Using a 2024 pick indicates this would happen before or during the draft which would mean Nashville is on the hook for paying Marner's signing bonus which is more than 7 mil and most of the money he's due this year. Nashville won't trade for Marner until after the draft, no team will.
Also Mitch Marner as good as he is won't get a return like this. He has full control of where he goes and that always limits the return. If Marner comes to TML and says he'll only go to Nashville, then Nashville has full control of how much they'll pay or they simply wait until he hits FA and go about it that way.
Toronto will be disappointed in the return for Marner, but the truth is he lost most of his value when his NMC kicked in last year.
Molendyk is most likely untouchable as he is the best D prospect in Nashville's system.

Statsney had an On-Ice Expected Goals% of 54%. That was higher than every Pred's Dman not named Roman Josi. He was an AHL Allstar and mostly played with Luke Schenn as his partner, and he still had great numbers. He looked fine in a small sample size, and has earned a shot at a bigger role next year.
Saying he's not good enough for top 4 minutes when he's only 24 with only 28 games in the NHL, but a +14 +/-, and a ton of room for growth is crazy

I don't think so, the way I see this move is Trotz making room for the young guys already in Milwaukee. I think this move is so Statsney can have a full time role in the top4 next year

Call Me Crazy
Nashville doesn't need a defenseman who is going to be 35 shortly into next season, and is also under contract until 2027. We moved McDonagh to get younger. As much as RD is a hole on the roster, Spurgeon isn't the solution. Not to mention there are a number of guys who could be affordable FA options like Montour, Pesce, or Roy.

Whyd we trade McDonagh
Let's be real. McDonagh was 35 and as great a defenseman as he was this year, we couldn't reasonably expect him to be as impressive the next two. Factor in managements opinion of Statsney, MDG, and Molendyk, and you can see why they'd want to clear the way for the younger guys to get a real chance to play top 4 minutes.
I also think this was Trotz doing McD a solid, and trading him to a team with real aspirations to win the cup and not a team that's still piecing things together. Not to mention how much McD wanted to be back home in Tampa

Oh yeah and of course the cap space it creates is super nice, while we wait for Joey and Duchenes dead cap to come off the books. This move makes a ton of sense for Nashville for all kinds of reasons.
This honestly makes room for someone like Stamkos, if Trotz can find a way to bring him to Nashville at a reasonable length and price

This team loves 7th round picks and later. Look at recent 7th rounder Juuso Parssinen or go even further back for 8th rounder Pekka Rinne. They probably let David Poile pick this one so he feels included

It makes sense in the grand scheme of things. Nashville has a lot of young LD, including Spencer Statsney, Marc Del Gaizo, and Tanner Molendyk. Statsney and MDG proved they can play in the NHL last year, so this clears that logjam and will let your D corps get younger and a little faster.
And I'm sure McDonagh wanted to get back to Tampa, and finish out his career really competing for a cup. Not playing for the Preds as they build back up to being a competitor.
Tidy bit of business all things considered. Preds traded for him for a college prospect who had no real chance of making the team and Phillipe Myers who was a complete let down from the Ryan Ellis trade. Then we send him back after two years and get a 2nd.
Not bad Barry

Marner
They recently did a fan survey on The Athletic about how Preds fans want to move forward with the goalie situation. Only 3% of fans said they would trade Askarov and keep Saros, the rest voted to trade Saros or extend him and keep both.
Long story short, Askarov is not available. He was only being dangled last year so Trotz could make a move into the top 5 and potentially get one of the top 4 centers.
If the Preds do trade for Marner, we can reasonably assume neither Saros or Askarov will be in the package. More than likely any package for Marner would be a veteran NHLer, young NHLer with upside, and a couple of futures whether that be prospects or picks.
The package is fine outside of Askarov. While I don't think Kemell would be on the table in most trades, I could see him being a piece included for someone like Marner.

Genuinely curious if the Saros offer is serious or a troll.
Robertson is a good player, but too often injured and not a position of need for Nashville. We already have young wingers ready to make the leap, or try, to the NHL.
We don't need Martin Jones. No one but the Leafs do.
So it comes down to 19 OA for Saros and that's just not enough

Let's just cross off the Atlantic division, because none of the Leafs rivals are going to pay an in-division trade price for Marner
Doubt he waives for Columbus
Doubt he waives for the Flyers
Doubt he waives for the Isles
Rangers don't need more wingers
Devils don't need another high end forward
Doubt he waives for the Penguins
Doubt he waives for the Capitals
Maybe the Hurricanes but they have to pay Necas and Jarvis and Marner is the exact opposite of what they need because they need guys who perform in the playoffs

LA doesn't need another top 6 winger
Anaheim isn't in a position to try and get a high impact forward and try competing soon
Edmonton doesn't need a guy like him
Calgary has Huberdeau they don't need a Marner
Vancouver also has high end forwards and not the cap space to add another
San Jose he won't waive for
Utah probably won't waive for
Dallas doesn't need a winger with his contract
Avs don't need him
Minny doesn't have the cap
Blues don't have a good franchise direction so they're out
Seattle maybe, but I guarantee they won't be offering anything like Shane Wright and who knows if Marner would waive for them either
Vegas can't fit him until Mark Stone goes on LTIR again
Doubt he waives for Winnipeg
Maybe Chicago, but again who would they give up and would they really trade for someone when they can just ball out in free agency

Another Marner Deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gmgb</b></div><div>Marner's a regular season specialist, and he definitely doesn't feel like the kind of guy who'd buck the trend of having his production falling off, once he gets to NSH and has a fat new contract. Yes, he would make NSH a better team, but so would any of those UFAs I mentioned. Presumably they'd all sign for less than Marner, on their next contract (a guy who was making $4.5-6.5M is going to be a lot more enthusiastic about $8-10M, than a guy who was already making $11M).
Is Marner a bit younger and better than any of those guys? Sure (at least for the first 82 games in the season). Does that talent gap bridge the difference between whatever assets it would cost acquire him, plus the extra cap space he'd use up? I don't feel it does. And that's just comparing Marner to other wingers that could be available. When you compare him to where that acquisition cost and cap space could go instead (ie. C or RD), he's not a wise investment.</div></div>
Truth be told I hope Trotzy can work a miracle and get Stammer on an O'Reilly type deal, and maybe a Brandon Montour at less than 7 mil, then call it a good free agency and focus on drafting some high upside guys or trading into the top 12 with a couple of the 2nd rounders we have this year to catch whoever might fall this year, a la Zach Benson last year.

Even that, I'd be reluctant to do. If Trotz really is intent on adding a top line winger, why would he trade for Marner before exploring UFAs? Reinhart, Guentzel, Marchessault are all options that could be had for less money/term than a Marner extension. None of them would cost any assets. They all have more playoff experience too.
I think people are forgetting how Trotz's name came up as being in conversation about every player on the market, when he first became GM. I think he's listening and gathering as much info on everyone he can, without necessarily being interested in them. Poile was the same way (but famously air-tight, about not letting his name come up in rumours like this). There are too many reasons why Marner doesn't make sense for NSH, for me to think otherwise.</div></div>
Marner is top 7 in points in the last 5 years. Only behind guys like McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon, Draisaitl, Pastranak, and Panarin.
I agree I'd rather explore a UFA, but Marner is exactly what Nashville has never been able to draft and develop. He fits what Trotz said we needed which is someone who gets people out of their seats. I'd love a Sam Reinhart, but I also think Marner is going to be available for a reasonable price. If that's the case it's worth exploring what the cost would be.
I also agree with the Trotz sentiment he's calling everyone and doing his due diligence on every player who might be available.

This is a special case too. Leafs need to move one of the Core 4 to balance their roster out. Not a lot of teams can take an 11 mil contract with minimal or no retention. Marner has a NMC, and the Leafs don't have a ton of leverage. There's a lot of pressure from fans to get something done and Marner has obviously made himself the target of y'alls hate.
I doubt Trotz was calling the Leafs to offer up a package like this. He was most likely doing his due diligence on what Marner would cost. Not to mention it looks like he's the only GM who has called about Marner with serious intentions.
At least Eichel had a bidding war going on and multiple teams were willing to trade for him before his surgery.

You're not getting either Wood or Evangelista out of Nashville. Evangelista is the only young forward we have who is meeting expectations in the NHL. Wood was drafted to be a project forward with high upside, and he still has a lot of development in front of him.
Look at the Eichel trade as a recent comp.
The counter offer is Sissons, Tomasino, and a couple of picks.
